The boom in volunteer archaeology
Article Abstract:
Local, state, and federal archaeological programs and organizations have seen enormous growth in volunteer participation over the past few years. While the causes are unclear, the benefits have been direct and obvious: as the number of sites needing excavation and preservation has swelled, the professional community has not. Groups have thus welcomed the increase of up to 550% in amateur participation since 1991. Annual Archeology Weeks now take place in 30 states, and the ties between different volunteer and professional groups have strengthened. Children and the handicapped are increasingly involved.

The landscape genius
Article Abstract:
The excavations and investigations of William Kelso at Shadwell, Monticello, and Poplar Forest near Charlottesville, reveal the landscape designs of Thomas Jefferson. The present excavation and conservation work adds more information to the landscape designs of Jefferson found in the nineteenth century paintings of his residences. Poplar Forest will be open to the public after restoration, while plans are being made to convert Monticello into an institute for Jefferson scholarship.
