The library without walls
Article Abstract:
The Library of Congress is digitizing its collection of American historical photographs and film strips and plans to make part of the collection available on the Internet's World Wide Web. The first images were digitized at low resolution, but the Library plans higher resolutions in the future. The collection includes Mathew Brady's Civil War photographs, films of San Francisco before and after the 1906 earthquake, and color photos from the 1930s and 1940s. The images reproduce fairly well, but copyright restrictions prevent downloading of some images because they are not in the public domain. The Library's goal is to create a National Digital Library and to make five million items available on the Internet by the turn of the century. The Library's Geography and Map Div will also digitize several hundred maps for availability on the Library's Web site.
