Many of the most significant legal events in 1996 revolved around litigation against tobacco companies by class action, states, and cities. Some law firms were named as co-defendants and others that represent cigarette makers were barred from some government work. Other important events included a series of US Supreme Court decisions regarding punitive and compensatory damages, US District Judge Harold Baer's public reversal of a decision under political pressure, and CA's passage of an anti-affirmative action initiative.

Article Abstract:
'The Miami Herald' publisher Dave Lawrence says that stories about him and his paper run the gamut from passable to biased. He also believes that much of the coverage is shallow with numerous factual errors. He attributes unfair coverage to the intellectual laziness of reporters and suggests that reporters simply state the facts and let readers decide about issues. He also fails to recall any story that he considers fair.

The play of the gods
Article Abstract:
Cambodians have done their best to preserve their traditional dances. Troupes at refugee camps in Phnom Penh worked hard to revive traditional dance following the deaths of over 80% of dancers during the Khmer Rouge period. Dancers embody the ideals of grace, beauty and continuity between the past and present. They are taught kinesically, with teachers molding their bodies to achieve the proper forms.
