Christophe-Philippe Oberkampf created cotton fabrics with elaborate designs using wood blocks in 1759. His complex color-fastening process was later replaced by copperplate printing which produced more detailed images.

The first imports of blue-and-white china were seen by the western world during the 15th century. From then on, chinaware became highly popular because of its elegant and timeless designs and colors.
