Article Abstract:
Twelve newspaper journalists, designers and editors have contributed their favourite newspaper pages for a book due to be published in 1998. Don Berry selected a page from the Oct 14 1984 issue of the Sunday Times which reported on the IRA bombing of the Grand Hotel in Brighton, UK, and included a sketch of the effect of the blast. Magnus Linklater chose the front page of the May 20 1994 issue of The Scotsman profiling a child sex killer, which achieved focus and simplicity. Peter Palazzo chose a page from the Aug 12 1994 issue of the Plain Dealer which made clever use of headline type.

SND needs to reach out
Article Abstract:
The Society of Newspaper Design has a disproportionately small number of minority members when compared with the industry. The reasons are industry member's perceptions of the organisation which gives the impression it would not be useful to them, lack of contacts and that membership fees are paid by companies. Companies should rotate membership of the organization and women who wish to become members should ask their employers. Greater diversity within the organization would help increase newspaper readerships.
