Purchasing power
Article Abstract:
The future of government furniture purchasing policy will depend on which party wins power. The Labour party, should it come into power, would probably invest more than 54 billion pounds sterling per year on renovations, constructing new buildings, and urban design. The government is the furniture industry's major client. Purchases used to be made by The Crown Suppliers (TCS), which was dissolved during the Thatcher era, as it was not successfully privatised. Furniture purchasing is currently handled by the Property Services Agency (PSA), which will itself be privatised. There is now an opportunity for private companies to enter the field.

Keeping up appearances
Article Abstract:
Hitachi Consumer Products' creation of a UK design team was a result of the gradual realisation that European design was required if the firm was to make a breakthrough in designing for the European market. In Hirwaun, UK, Hitachi now has a two-man design department, and the European collection now has only one model designed completely by Japanese designers. Hitachi manages to maintain its brand image and quality while exerting only loose control on design policy, so that the designers are able to develop new concepts.

Life after systems
Article Abstract:
Office systems furniture is less valid because work processes have changed, becoming less ridgid and repetitive. The furniture will become less functional and more attention will be given to aesthetic quality and materials. Much of design by UK designers is too reactive or imitative, but were high on a scale of practicality.
