Question: is InDesign good enough to replace QuarkXPress?; answer: not yet!
Article Abstract:
Adobe Systems Inc. has released beta versions of their latest software for layout and typography applications for the advertising and publishing industry. Adobe's InDesign is expected to be release to the public by the summer of 2000. This software package has been Adobe's response to Quark's famous XPress software. XPress has been the industry standard for most newspaper and magazine companies. InDesign may be used with other Adobe products such as Photoshop and Illustrator. However, for those already using XPress, it may be necessary to purchase new hardware and software if switching to InDesign.

Your choice of font should depend on how well you print
Article Abstract:
The quality of printing reproduction has an impact on the design and legibility of body-sized typefaces. Despite the control newspaper companies have regarding their newspapers' typography, the limited technology available narrows the choice of type design. Efforts should be made to reduce the variables such as replenishment rates of processors, adjustments of lesser beams and to produce type to the same standards that are used to produce color. The choice of a body type should depend on the ability of that newspapers to reproduce it.
