The Brookings Institution
Article Abstract:
Gensler's impressive renovation of Washington, D.C.'s Brookings Institution building was recognized during the 19th Annual Interiors Awards Competition where the building was named Best Public Space. Gensler revised the first-floor plan, providing fire exits through adjacent buildings, and rerouted circulation so that employees would pass through a grand ceremonial drop-off entrance in the front instead of entering through the conference area and cafeteria. An oversized glazed exterior canopy was also added to illuminate the gloomy lobby and special lighting was installed to make the building glow at night.

The designers focused on three abandoned corridors off a central rotunda in the fourth floor attic. Skylights were opened, corridors were relocated and the space around the dome was adjusted to accomodate the studio and review spaces. A mixture of wood furniture and painted steel elements were used to highlight windows, doors and skylight openings within the studio and review area.
