Abusing Web readers
Article Abstract:
Newspapers have a tendency to make assumptions about the design of World Wide Web sites which, more often than not, are false. Large and small newspapers run sites that feature JavaScript clocks, multiple HTML frame sets and animated banner advertisements requiring readers to find and install a plug-in. These features are being justified by newspapers, thinking that surfers respond to sites that appeal to the senses or that they prefer clicking to scrolling. Newspapers are advised to refrain from making assumptions to make their Web sites really effective.

The small newspaper check-up
Article Abstract:
Analysis of the design and typography of the Carroll County Times finds that the headline fonts are easy to read and are attractive, but need greater variety with subheadings. Front-page layouts are well organized and attractive and the art that is used is displayed well. The design of the section fronts in general is strong and well organized, but the inside needs more consistent design to create better order on the pages. Overall, the Carroll County Times presents a good paper, and few minor adjustments could give the paper a modern look.
