Farming on the world's edge
Article Abstract:
The climatic conditions and geographical terrain of the West Falklands are ideal for pastoral farming. The large company-owned farms have been subdivided since the 1982 Falkland Island war. The subdivision has meant better productivity management, but because the subdivision was done without professional surveyors there are conflicts such as maintenance of collectively owned farm equipment and distribution of water. Increasing isolation and unemployment have also become problems. Oil development may bring more prosperity but it will also destroy the cultural fabric of West Falkland.

Imitation and flattery
Article Abstract:
Richard Byrne and Michael Tomasello's criticism of the series of experiments conducted by Heyes, et al. to prove emulation learning in rats is ill-founded. There was synchronization in the lever pushing by the demonstrator and observer rats in the studies and the observations made were done scientifically and hence, not ambiguous. The definition of imitation is related to the purpose of the study and is not determined by individual persons. The existing research about the evidence of imitation in primates during the early 1990s has a many weak points.
