Sergei Diaghilev: Gesture and destiny

Impresario Sergei Diaghilev, was known for his mannerism of nervously snapping his fingers, as if willing events to accelerate when he lost his patience. Extracts from his letters written to his relatives and friends bring to the fore his personality suggested by this mannerism, which constituted of living on aspirations rather than success, scaling of obstacles rather than the attainment of goals and striving to transcend reality and enter a world that others had yet to tread.

Diaghilev's last letter
Article Abstract:
Impresario Sergei Diaghilev 's last known letter written to Igor Markevitch, whom he considered as a promising young pianist and composer, is published. The last paragraph of the letter is the most noteworthy and reflective, where he emphasizes the need of exercising patience to help one see beyond the obstacles that petty, narrow minded people put up against all efforts to dispel the ordinary.

The Bolshoi at Covent Garden
Article Abstract:
The Bolshoi Ballet's new artistic director, Alexei Ratmansky, has succeeded in London's 2004 season. Ratmansky has revealed some of his future plans and he would like to revive productions from the Soviet era, The Red Poppy, Laurencia, The Flames of Paris.
