Starting from scratch: Art ceramics in Flanders

Article Abstract:

The origin of art ceramics or studio pottery in Flanders, Belgium around 1900 and its development in the region are discussed considering its success that flourished over the years due to the innovative efforts of ceramists such as Joost Marechal, and Rogier and Laurent Vandeweghe. However, rising costs and tax increases severely affected the production of artistic pottery leading to the end of art ceramics in Flanders by the end of the 1970s.

Clarice Cliff: Jazz hot baby of Art Decor ceramics

Article Abstract:

The ceramic plates, tea sets, vases, sugar sifters and jam pots that Clarice Cliff designed were not only emblematic of Art Deco Age but also representative of the artist's indomitable spirit. Influenced by the Art Deco in Paris, she translated them into designs for tableware and home accessories through her Bizarre line which became instantly fashionable wedding gifts and in 1930 she unveiled her now-iconic Jazz figures.

Discovering John Foster

Article Abstract:

A ceramic collector, while collecting John Foster's pieces, suggests that one must choose a Foster piece based on quality. Some of Foster's creations include Shorebird (1954), Yin-Yang (1950) and Tear-Drop vase (1952) and Sapphire Cascade (1959), which he describes as 'a considered statement about life and living'.
