The beginning of New York City Ballet
Article Abstract:
'Orpheus' was the focal point of the Ballet Society's much-anticipated fifth program and George Balanchine, Igor Stravinsky and the Japanese-American artist Isamu Noguchi collaborated on this production. Stravinsky was intensely involved with this project. 'Orpheus' became a historic milestone and was also a success artistically. Morton Baum, chmn of the Executive Committee of the City Center of Music, suggested that Ballet Society be renamed the New York City Ballet. Seasons were brief and money was tight in the beginning. There was some collaboration with the American Ballet Theatre and City Ballet's repertory was also expanded to include Antony Tudor ballets.

Three early letters
Article Abstract:
Portions of three letters written by Lincoln Kirstein to Jean Cocteau, A. Everett Austin, Jr. and Muriel Draper from 1929 to 1935 are presented. Kirstein cofounded the New York City Ballet and the School of American Ballet with George Ballanchine. The letters show Kirstein in several of his early roles including acting as agent for Ballanchine and discuss the initial New York season of Kirstein's first ballet company.

The Royal Ballet
Article Abstract:
This article describes the early history of England's Royal Ballet company from its beginning in 1957 through 1990. How the Royal Ballet became part of the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden, the influences of dancers, choreographers, and directors, and the need for national support are described.
