Strong effects of weak interactions in ecological communities

Article Abstract:

The distribution of per capita interaction strengths among a range of consumer-prey interactions using a common metric, was quantified in recent empirical studies. The largest estimated range of interaction strengths occurred for species with mean effects thought to be weak or insignificant. Indirect interactions are widespread in natural communities and weak interactors may have an important, although unappreciated, role in maintaining landscape-scale diversity.
