Gas wars: retail gasoline price fluctuations
Article Abstract:
An analysis of retail gasoline price fluctuations is presented. The analysis was directed at the Los Angeles, CA area and covered the period from Jan 2, 1968 to Dec 23, 1975. It is shown that the fluctuations were considerably regular and easily predictable. The results confirmed the assumptions of the game theory model of Maskin and Tirole, which depicted competing firms undercutting each other but eventually giving way.
