Turnabout
Article Abstract:
The article by Ralph Spurgin in the May/June 1998 issue of Credit World decrying debit cards is challenged by MasterCard and Visa. The article centered on the class-action lawsuit filed by major retailers against the debit card programs of the two credit card companies. MasterCard argues that it does not discourage merchants from honoring competing cards and stresses that it allows consumers to choose the payment method they want to use. Visa defended itself by emphasizing that it simply wanted its customers to know that they can use their Visa card, including the debit card, when they buy from a merchandiser that displays the Visa flag in its window. Both companies point out that they are actually allowing consumer choice. Ralph Spurgin provides his counter-arguments.
