1992 Genetics Society of America Medal: Maynard V. Olson

Article Abstract:

Maynard V. Olson will be awarded the 1992 Genetics Society of America medal for his significant contributions in the field of genetics. Olsen started out as an inorganic chemist, but later settled on genetics while working on the cloning and sequencing of the tyrosine tRNA genes in yeast. He made other significant contributions in yeast molecular genetics, not the least of which was the development of pulsed field gel electrophoresis. More than anyone, Maynard madefruitful the convergence of genetic and physical mapping. Maynard has recently taken up the study of physical mapping of the human genome.

1992 Thomas Hunt Morgan Medal: Edward H. Coe, Jr

Article Abstract:

Edward Coe, Jr. will be awarded the Thomas Hunt Morgan Medal for his lifelong contribution to genetics.Coe's research centers on maize genetics, where he he has made significant contributions in the elucidation of the b locus, the c locus, the white pollen locus, analyses of the morphological development of maize, pollen mutagenesis and others. Besides his research, Coe's service to the maize genetics communityhas been extensive and important. He is presently the research leader ot the USDA-ARS Plant Genetics Research Unit at Columbia.

The 1998 Thomas Hunt Morgan Medal: Norman H. Horowitz

Article Abstract:

Norman Horowitz's career in genetics spans over six decades. Born in Pittsburgh, PA, on Mar 19, 1915, Horowitz studied at the University of Pittsburgh and California Institute of Technology. He made several important discoveries and studies in genetics, including the evolution of biochemical pathways, one-gene-one-enzyme hypothesis and use of conditional auxotrophic mutations. In addition, Horowitz proved that there is no life on Mars using a series of experiments on biological interactions with carbon dioxide.
