An association, in adult Japanese, between the occurrence of rogue cells among cultured lymphocytes (JC virus) activity and the frequency of "simple" chromosomal damage among the lymphocytes of persons exhibiting these rogue cells
Article Abstract:
An association has been found in Japanese adults between occurrence of rogue cells in cultured lymphocytes and frequency of simple chromosomal damage in lymphocytes of those having rogue cells. Data from a study of cytogenetic effects in cultured lymphocytes of exposure to the atomic bomb in Hiroshima have been analyzed again. Rogue cells are those with complex chromosomal damage, thought to be from activity of a human polyoma virus called JC. Of 1,835 people examined, rogue cells were found in 45. Cells numbering 179,599 were scored for simple chromosomal damage. In those with rogue cells a disproportionately higher representation of people who had received relatively high radiation exposures from the bomb was found. It is a temptation to relate the finding to some lingering effect of exposure or surrounding circumstances on immunocompetence.

Sibling-based tests of linkage and association for quantitative traits
Article Abstract:
Two new procedures have been developed using data from siblings to test both linkage and association with quantitative traits. Both biallelic and multiallelic loci can be accommodated. One procedure involves mixed-effects analysis of variance, while the other is permutation-based. Power studies have been performed to evaluate the tests' relative power under various circumstances.
