Analysis of BIOLOG GN substrate utilization patterns by microbial communities
Article Abstract:
Research was conducted to examine whether BIOLOG GN plates accurately reflects the catabolic potential of the inoculum used. Temperature gradient gel electrophoresis and denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis profiles of the 16S rRNA gene fragments amplified from microbial communities of various BIOLOG wells were used. Data obtained from comparing the microbial communities of potato rhizospheres and an activated sludge indicate that the latter has BIOLOG patterns that reflect more closely the functional potential of the community used as the inoculum.

Evaluation of two library-independent microbial source tracking methods to identify sources of fecal contamination in French estuaries
Article Abstract:
Evaluation of two library-independent microbial source tracking methods was conducted to identify sources of fecal contamination in French estuaries. Two human specific markers, one ruminant specific marker (CF193) and one pig-specific marker (PF163) showed a high level of specificity indicating that host-specific markers were more sensitive than F-specific bacteriophage genotyping in identifying the origin of fecal contamination.

Use of antibiotic resistance analysis to identify nonpoint sources of fecal pollution
Article Abstract:
There are consistent differences between the antibiotic susceptibility of fecal streptococci, depending on what source they came from. This information can be used to determine the source of fecal pollution in water.
