Bmi-1 promotes neural stem cell self-renewal and neural development but not mouse growth and survival by repressing the p16(super Ink4a) and p19(super Arf) senescence pathways
Article Abstract:
Compound mutant mice that lack Bmi-1 is generated to test whether Ink4a deletion rescues stem cells frequency or neural development in Bmi-1(super -/-) mice, and whether p19(super Arf) also mediates part of the effect of Bmi-1 on stem cell function or neural development. Bmi-1 is required for the post-natal maintenance of stem cells in multiple tissues including the central nervous system (CNS) and peripheral nervous system (PNS).

Rb is critical in a mammalian tissue stem cell population
Article Abstract:
A study shows that the specific loss of retinoblastoma (Rb) in trophoblast stem (TS) cells leads to an overexpansion of trophoblasts, a disruption of placental architecture and fetal death by E15.5. It is concluded that the Rb pathway plays an important role in the maintenance of a mammalian stem cell population.

p63 and the epithelial stem cell: more than status quo?
Article Abstract:
The discovery of p63, the most ancient member of the p53 backs reports of a remarkable phenotype of mice lacking this gene. Although the p63 expression is not limited to stem cells of the epithelial tissues that express that gene, studies reveal that stem cells express the highest levels of p63.
