Dual symbiosis in a Bathymodiolus sp. mussel from a methane seep on the Gabon continental margin (Southeast Atlantic): 16S rRNA phylogeny and distribution of the symbionts in gills
Article Abstract:
An investigation on the morphology of symbiotic bacteria in deep-sea mussels of the genus Bathymodiolus is conducted using transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The results indicate that the Bathymodiolus sp. mussels studied from the Gabon margin harbor two morphologically distinct bacteria that resemble the methanotrophic (5,14,16) and thiotrophic (13,17) symbionts of other Bathymodiolus species.

Comparison of rRNA and polar-lipid-derived fatty acid biomarkers for assessment of [super 13]C-substrate incorporation by microorganisms in marine sediments
Article Abstract:
Coastal sediment was labeled with various C-substrates, and the incorporation of label in bacterial and eukaryotic rRNA and polar-lipid-derived fatty acid biomarkers studied. Results reveal that labeling was always much greater in bacterial specific small-subunit (SSU) rRNA than in eukaryotic SSU rRNA, signifying that bacteria were the main consumers of [super 13]C-labeled compounds.

Simultaneous fluorescence in situ hybridization of mRNA and rRNA in environmental bacteria
Article Abstract:
An improved protocol for the simultaneous detection of mRNA and rRNA in environmental microorganisms is reported. With a combination of simultaneous mRNA fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) and rRNA FISH, key players of biochemical processes are identified.
