Estimating and testing hypotheses about the number of genes using inbred-backcross data
Article Abstract:
A mathematical method uses maximum likelihood to estimate the difference between the number of genes in the donor and the recurrent parent, in the inbred-backcross breeding technique. Weighted least squares is used for standard errors and hypothesis tests. The data for the inheritance of resistance to bacterial blight in Phaseolus vulgaris L. is used to estimate the number of donor parent genes involved in the resistant phenotype. The resistant Phaseolus line BAC-6 has lesser number of genes for leaf resistance and more for pod resistance than XAN-159.

Pseudogene evolution and natural selection for a compact genome
Article Abstract:
The large difference in deletio spectra between Drosophilia and mammalian pseudogenes cannot easily be attributed to selection for overall genome size, it is argued. Possible biases in spontaneous mutations are discussed.
