Maize stocks modified to enhance the recovery of Ac-induced mutations
Article Abstract:
The Activator (Ac) transposable element of maize is most active when it occurs as a single genomic copy, and it transposes locally on a chromosome. A set of stocks where a different region of the maize genome is made more vulnerable to insertion by Ac was developed. Each stock has pericentric inversion or reciprocal translocation, and the rearranged 1S chromosome is converted by genetic recombination to possess an Ac-bearing allele of the pericarp color locus.

Dorsal skin color patterns among southern right whales (Eubalena australis): Genetic basis and evolutionary significance
Article Abstract:
Skin biopsy samples from free-swimming right whales off South Africa were collected, and their sex determined genetically using a PCR-based three-primer system for the ZFY/ZFX sex-chromosome-specific region. The frequency of pigment patterns in right whale populations off South Africa and Argentina was analyzed together with cow-calf transmission patterns, to determine possible genetic mechanism for color types.

Inheritance and genetic mapping of the campus syndrom (CPS): A high-frequency tremor disease in pigs
Article Abstract:
A new hereditary tremor disorder in the Pietrain pig breed has been genetically characterized and mapped. Campus syndrome (CPS) is thought to be inherited as an autosomal dominant trait, and the founder boar is thought to be a gonadal mosaic. Myopathological findings in human dominant distal myopathy type 1 (MDP1) are strikingly similar to CPS, thus the porcine disorder may act as an animal model for MPD1.
