Two nuclear-directed means of suppressing a dominant mitochondrial mutation in common bean
Article Abstract:
Plant mitochondria show marked differences in genome size, recombinational activity, organization and gene expression, compared to fungal and animal counterparts. Recent research demonstrating the way in which the pvs-orf239 mitochondrial mutation in cytoplasmic male sterility (CMS) common bean is suppressed by nuclear-directed mechanisms, is summarized. This requires mitochondrial genomic shifts in relative DNA copy number, and mapping evidence supports the hypothesis of pvs-orf239 retention.

Genes and proteins of the transcriptional apparatus in mitochondria
Article Abstract:
The transcription apparatus in mitochondria has been studied, with a focus on flowering plants (angiosperms). Mitochondrial RNA (mtRNA) polymerase is a single-polypeptide bacteriophage (T3/T7)-like enzyme, encoded in the nucleus in most eukaryotes studied to date. A phagelike RNA polymerase gene has been discovered in angiosperms, possibly occurring from duplication of a preexisting gene encoding the mtRNA polymerase.
