Evaluation of the biological sampling kit (BiSKit) for large-area surface sampling
Article Abstract:
A new biological surface sampling method, the Biological Sampling Kit (BiSKit) designed to sample large areas and to be compatible with testing with a variety of technologies is evaluated and compared to other surface sampling strategies. The results demonstrate that the use of a sampling device capable of sampling larger areas results in higher sensitivity than that obtained with currently available methods.

PCR for bioaerosol monitoring: sensitivity and environmental interference
Article Abstract:
PCR amplification of DNA may be used to detect microorganisms in the air more rapidly and accurately than methods that rely on culturing airborne organisms. The PCR method could detect as little as one bacterial cell in an air sample within 5 hours if a solid-phase technique was used and within 9 hours if a freeze-thaw method was used. Sampling stress did not appear to affect the sensitivity of the PCR test.

Determination of the efficacy of two building decontamination strategies by surface sampling with culture and quantitative PCR analysis
Article Abstract:
The efficacy of decontamination strategies was determined, and surface sampling methods and quantitative PCR (QPCR) for the enhanced detection of a target biocontaminant present on building material furnishings were evaluated. The results show the effectiveness of two decontamination methods, and illustrate the utility of surface sampling and QPCR analysis for the evaluation of decontamination strategies.
