Hairy-sheath-frayed 1-O is a non-cell-autonomous mutation that regulates developmental stage transitions in maize

Article Abstract:

The methanesulfonate-induced hairy-sheath-frayed 1-O mutation in corn was investigated using individuals induced by X-rays to exhibit the trait in a mosaic fashion. The gene for the trait hairy-sheath-frayed 1-O, designated as Hsf1-O, delays stage transition in the development of corn. The gene product of this particular locus was shown to be non-cell-autonomous and was shown to diffuse over short distances. This gene product may be responsible for stage transition in corn.

Genetic and developmental bases for phenotypic plasticity in deepwater rice

Article Abstract:

Experiments showed that a recessive gene was responsible for deepwater tolerance and plants with that recessive gene induced internodal elongation in response to submergence. Plants without the recessive gene had no internodal elongation and died quickly. The induction of internodal elongation was developmentally regulated since the responsive ability of the successive gene was reduced after floral initiation.
