Heparin and pentosan polysulfate

Article Abstract:

Sea urchin eggs were microinjected with calcium Green-1 or Ca- Green dextran to examine the effect of sperm-induced activation current and increase in cytosolic calcium on the liberation of Ca2+ into the cytosol. Measurements of [Ca2+]i showed that agents such as heparin or pentosan polysulfate inhibit the liberation of Ca2+ from the cytoplasm. Microinjection of higher amounts of the agents into the eggs completely suppressed the elevation of [Ca2+]i and the phase 2 calcium-activated cation current.

Rio's forest fiasco

Article Abstract:

The UN Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) utterly failed to make a decent start toward an international protection of the Earth's forests. Due mainly to the opposition of Malaysia and India, UNCED adopted a weakly written Statement of Forest Principles rather than the bold declaration that forest conservationists hoped for. Forest advocates should realize the uselessness of working through the UN and should focus on persuading forest nations to act among themselves for conservation.
