I-R system of hybrid dysgenesis in Drosophila melanogaster: analysis of the mitochondrial DNA in reactive strains exhibiting different potentials for I factor transposition
Article Abstract:
Drosophila melanogaster strains have been studied relative to hybrid dysgenesis of the inducer (I)-reactor (R) system. D. melanogaster strains are in two categories in the IR hybrid dysgenesis system, I and R. Among the reactive strains are those with weak, medium or strong reactivity levels. They are inherited in a complex way involving both chromosomal and determinants, the nonchromosomal mainly maternally inherited. Molecular aspects of the maternal transmission and the possible implication of the mitochondrial DNA in determination of reactivity levels were of interest. No correlation was seen between reactivity level and mtDNA sequence. The different reactivity levels and transgenerational transmission may reflect epigentic changes.

Drosophila melanogaster and D. simulans rescue strains produce fit offspring, despite divergent centomere-specific histone alleles
Article Abstract:
Research has been conducted on Drosophila centomere-specific histone Cid which demonstrates sequence divergence between D. melanogaster and D. simulans. The authors report that cid is not involved in restoring female fertility or hybrid viability, and that it undergoes adaptive evolution after the divergence of D. melanogaster and D. simulans.
