In response to Murphy et al., Lower et. al., and Lan et al

Article Abstract:

The induced expression of insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus superantigen, IDDMK(sub 1,2)22, resulted to stimulation of circulating Vbeta7 T cells, including autoreactive T cells. The expression of IDDMK(sub 1,2)22 was closely associated with HERV-RNAs in the plasma of diabetic patients. The correlation between IDDM at preclinical stages, peripheral Vbeta7 expansion and the retroviral HERV expression requires the accurate molecular designation of the superantigen function.

HERV-K10s and immune-mediated (type 1) diabetes

Article Abstract:

Conrad et al conducted a study regarding the viral etiology of type 1 diabetes mellitus and the suggestion that the pancreatic beta cell damage was influenced by autoreactive T lymphocytes activated by a retroviral superantigen. Their study showed the cloning of a superantigen encoded by the envelope gene of the endogenous retrovirus HERV-K10, IDDMK(sub 1,2)22. However, the absolute specificity of IDDMK(sub 1,2)22 viremia in diabetic patients was still not confirmed.

A human endogenous retroviral superantigen as candidate autoimmune gene in type I diabetes

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to isolate a novel mouse mammary tumor virus-related human endogenous retrovirus. The findings suggest that the N-terminal moiety of the envelope gene encodes an MHC class II-dependent SAG. Furthermore, the expression of this SAG results in Beta-cell destruction via the systematic activation of autoreactive T cells. This SAG, therefore, may be considered as a candidate autoimmune gene in type I diabetes.
