In vitro kinetic analysis of oligofructose consumption by bacteroides and Bifidobacterium spp. indicates different degradation mechanisms

Article Abstract:

The growth of pure cultures of Bacteroides thetaiotaomicron and B. fragilis on oligofructose was examined and compared to that of Bifidobacterium longum through in vitro laboratory fermentations. Both bacteroides strains did not display any preferential metabolism and degraded all oligofructose fractions simultaneously suggesting a different mechanism for oligofructose breakdown between the strain of Bifidobacterium and both strains of Bacteroides.

Growth of Dehalobacter and Dehalococcoides spp. during degradation of chlorinated ethanes

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to detect the sequences phylogenetically to Dehalobacter and Dehalococcoides, two genera of anaerobic bacteria that are known to respire with chlorinated ethenes, through cloning of bacterial 16S rRNA genes. It was observed that the competitive or complementary activities depend on the chloro-organic substrate, in the mixed cultures containing multiple dechlorinating micro-organisms.
