Intrinsic differences in axonal growth from crayfish fast and slow motoneurons
Article Abstract:
An intrinsic difference in growth cones is responsible for the different morphologies of the fast flexor (FF) motoneurons and the slow flexor (SF) motoneurons in crayfish abdominal muscles. The axons of FF motoneurons innervate the large flexor muscle and have longer terminal arbors and more branches than the axons of SF motoneurons, which innervate the thin flexor muscle. The nerve axons grew in the same patterns in culture even when the medium was changed and they were not stimulated. Microscopic examination revealed that growth cones in FF motoneurons were bigger and had more filopodia than those in SF motoneurons.

A reflection on ice
Article Abstract:
Glacier National Park in Montana and British Columbia is the third largest national park but it gets only about 2 million visitors a year. Its lack of attraction to visitors may be accounted for by distance and lack of marketable sights despite its glaciers and pristine lakes.

The millstones of Barbegal
Article Abstract:
The discovery of an ancient Roman flour mill in Barbegal, Southern France, is described. The possibility of the usage of the mill to test the ability of millstones to withstand the power of hydraulically driven mills is discussed.
