Isolation of nitrogen-fixing bacteria containing molybdenum-independent nitrogenases from natural environments

Article Abstract:

The isolation of nitrogen-fixing bacteria from environmental sources is described. Strains, designated DU1, TP1, WA1 and WC1, were isolated from mostly aquatic samples at sites located in Raleigh, NC, while strains, designated SM1 and SM2, were isolated from a salt marsh located near Beaufort NC. Strain WB3 was isolated from a salt marsh found near Wrightsville Beach, NC. Results indicate that the isolates can be classified in the gamma subdivision of the class Proteobacteria with genes that encode the Mo nitrogenase and the V nitrogenase.

Diversity and detection of nitrate assimilation genes in marine bacteria

Article Abstract:

Researchers used PCR analysis of the nasA genes in DNA extract from microbial communities in the South Atlantic Bight, the Barents Sea, and the North Pacific Gyre. These genes are involved in nitrate assimilation. Several groups of heterotrophic bacteria were discovered that can utilize nitrogen.
