Lettuce for human consumption collected in Costa Rica contains complex communities of culturable oxytetracycline- and gentamicin-resistant bacteria

Article Abstract:

A research focused to find whether the crops treated with antimicrobials are likely to expose the users to antimicrobial-resistant bacteria from the environment is conducted in the culturable microbiota of lettuce gathered at one organic and nine other traditional farms in Costa Rica to detect the presence of oxytetracycline- and gentamicin-resistant bacteria. It was observed that both the varieties of resistant species formed an important part of all culturable bacteria and included various resistance genes and factors for their likely horizontal transfer.

Stability and change in estuarine biofilm bacterial community diversity

Article Abstract:

The potential for using biofilm information as an environmental indicator was assessed by evaluating stability and change in the bacterial community structures of nascent bacterial biofouling communities. The stability observed in the presence of normal estuarine variability in a relatively healthy grass habit suggests that biofilm microbial communities may be useful in monitoring estuarine ecosystem conditions.
