Life below the gum line: pathogenic mechanisms of Porphyromonas gingivalis

Article Abstract:

The occurrence and pathogenicity of the gram-negative anaerobic bacteria, Porphyromonas gingivalis, were discussed. The mode of entry for the bacteria was through the oral cavity with saliva as the main vector for transmission. The bacteria adhered to oral surfaces such as teeth and mucosa of the gum, tongue and cheek. Their adherence interaction with the gingival crevice and periodontal tissues were associated with fimbriae and outer membrane proteins. The attachment of the bacteria to epithelial cells caused the formation of membrane invaginations that enclose and engulf the bacteria.

Polypeptides associated with tufts of cell-surface fibrils in an oral Streptococcus

Article Abstract:

The trypsin-extracted high molecular mass polypeptides are fragments of long cell-surface fibrils in an oral Streptococcus. The polypeptides are not the determinants of streptococcal cell adhesion to pellicle or to epithelial cells. The cells of the oral bacterium Streptococcus oralis CN3410generate lateral tufts of cell-surface fibrils of two lengths, and when treated with trypsin lead to loss of the tufts and creation of longer fibrils intact. Cell adhesion is unaffected by short fibril components of tufts.

Interruption of the Streptococcus gordonii M5 sspA/sspB intergenic region by an insertion sequence related to IS1167 of Streptococcus pneumoniae

Article Abstract:

A comparison of the Streptococcus gordonii DL1 and M5 sspA/sspB strains was conducted. Results reveal that the nucleotide sequence of the M5 sspAB intergenic region is different from that of the DL1 sspAB genes because of the presence of an insertion sequence related to the pneumococcal insertion sequence IS1167. It was concluded that the sspB promoters of S. gordonii M5 and DL1 are not conserved and suggested that ISSg1 sequences may influence the expression of sspB in S. gordonii M5.
