Life on the edge: The long-term persistence and contrasting spatial genetic structure of distinct brown trout life histories at their ecological limits

Article Abstract:

An estimated 847 individuals from 20 populations were examined from the Atlantic Iberian brown trout using protein and macrosatellite loci for understanding how disperse ability influences population differentiation, recreating the evolutionary history of these peripheral populations and assessing their conservation value. Empirical evidence indicates that peripheral populations might avoid the fate of extinction, which may have resulted from the purging of deleterious recessive alleles or compensatory mutations.
