Microbial biofilms: from ecology to molecular genetics

Article Abstract:

This review discuses the formation and propagation of biofilms, which are assemblages of microorganisms and their extracellular products attached to an abiotic or biotic surface. Data on the composition, structure and function, acquisition of genetic traits, and ecological significance of biofilms and molecular genetics of oral biofilms are presented.

Molecular genetics of Kaposi's sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (human herpesvirus 8) epidemology and pathogenesis

Article Abstract:

The authors review thew publications on molecular genetics of Kaposi's sarcoma-associated herpesvirus. The topics of interest include the epidemology and pathogenesis of Kaposi's sarcoma, and the relationship between Kaposi's sarcoma-associated herpesvirus replication and the malignancies associated with its infection of humans.

Actin-based motility of intracellular microbial pathogens

Article Abstract:

Intracellular microorganisms Listeria, Shigella, and Rickettsia and vaccinia virus use actin-based motility for the manifestation of their virulence. Research findings suggest that they exhibit a mechanism to utilize the cellular actin assembly machinery and the actin-based motility to move within and spread between cells.
