NF-kappa-B: a lesson in family values

Article Abstract:

NF-kappa-B proteins are transcriptional activators of the Rel family involved in the induction of extracellular signals in higher eukaryotes. These proteins undergo phosphorylation, translocating a string of degraded Rel dimers in the nucleus. The phosphorylation induces signal transduction pathways that lead to the stimulation of distinct sets of genes. Synergizing transcriptional activator proteins that are activated with NF-kappa-B proteins and the arrangement of regulatory sequences in the genes enable the choice of the right gene for induction.

A striking organization of a large family of human neural cadherin-like cell adhesion genes

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to analyze 52 novel human cadherin-like genes organized into three closely linked clusters. Results of DNA sequences with representative cDNAs revealed a genomic organization similar to that of immunoglobulin and T cell receptor gene clusters. The N-terminal extracellular and transmembrane domains of each cadherin protein are encoded by a unique exon organized in a tandem array.

Harold Weintraub (1945-1995)

Article Abstract:

Harold Weintraub studied many problems in molecular biology and identified the gene myoD which causes muscular differentiation in nonmuscle cells. He established the relation between gene activity and chromosome structure by showing that the nucleosomes are present on active genes in the chromosome. He introduced the concept of using using antisense RNA to induce mutation.
