Nonanoic acid, a fungal self-inhibitor, prevents germination of Rhizopus oligosporus sporangiospores by dissipation of the pH gradient
Article Abstract:
The dissipation of the intracellular pH gradient is responsible for the inhibition of germination of the Rhizopus oligosporus sporangiospores by the fungal self-inhibitor, nonanoic acid, and other weak acids. The germination of R. oligosporus sporangiospores involves spore swelling and emergence of germ tubes. Nonanoic acid, octanoic and decanoic acid prevent a pH increase and subsequent swelling of the spores, at concentrations less than one mM. Acetic acid prevents germination only at concentrations more than eight mM.

Physiological activity of Campylobacter jejuni far below the minimal growth temperature
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted to analyze the behavior of Campylobacter jejuni at environmental temperatures by examining the physiological activities of the pathogen. Polymerase chain reaction was carried out to show that cold shock protein genes were not present in C. jejuni. Results indicated the ability of the pathogen to move to favorable locations at environmental temperatures that is critical to the survival of C. jejuni.

Germination of penillium paneum conida is regulated by 1-Octen-3-ol, a volatile self-inhibitor
Article Abstract:
Pencillium paneum is an important contaminant of cereal grains, which is able to grow at low temperature, low ph, high levels of carbon dioxide, and under acid conditions. P. paneum produces mycotoxins, which may be harmful to animals and humans. It was found that conida in dense suspensions showed poor germination, suggesting the presence of a self-inhibitor.
