Patterns and dynamics of shorebird use of California's Central Valley
Article Abstract:
One of western North America's most important regions to migratory and wintering shorebirds is Central Valley in California. Surveys of most wetland and other shallow-water habitat in the valley from 1992 to 1995 offer proof of the abundance, geographic distribution and habitat use of shorebirds throughout the region and underscore its continent-wide importance to migrating and wintering shorebirds. Major threats to the valley's shorebirds were identified as poor and toxic water quality, habitat loss or degradation due to urbanization and evolving agricultural practices.

Wag the tail: structural dynamics of actomyosin
Article Abstract:
A review was done to describe energy transduction by actomyosin proteins in muscle fibers. Myosin contains two globular N-terminal heads, called subfragement-1 (S1) and an alpha-helical coiled-coil tail that form the filament structure. Release of intracellular phosphate (Pi) increases actoymyosin affinity and stress applied to the light chain (LC) domain of the myosin neck region. This stress is then translated into rotation of the neck toward the barbed end of actin which transmits force to the myosin tail and the filament backbone.

The dynamics of predation on Gammarus spp
Article Abstract:
The predominantly freshwater shrimp Gammarus is a common genus of the Gammaridea. Gammarus spp. have been recognized as both predators and herbivores, but their importance as prey in aquatic communities has not previously been considered. The impact of non-piscean predators on Gammarus prey species may be stronger than those exerted by fish. The importance of Gammarus as a prey species is examined.
