Plant cells contain two functionally distinct vacuolar compartments
Article Abstract:
The alpha-TIP (tonoplast intrinsic proteins) and the TIP-Ma27 antibodies defines the functional implications of the compartments of protein vacuoles. The alpha-TIP defines a compartment for protecting storage-type proteins from enzyme degradation. The TIP-Ma27 defines a separate acidic lytic compartment. Barley lectin vacuolar proteins were detected in alpha-TIP vacuoles while aleurain proteins were contained in TIP-Ma27. This mechanism indicates a receptor-mediated pathway for two separate vacuolar compartments.

A novel form of Epstein-Barr virus latency in normal B cells in vivo
Article Abstract:
A sensitive DNA PCR technique helps determine the exact number of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-infected cells in vivo and identify the type of cells infected and the form of infection. Peripheral blood EBV infection occurs primarily in the latently-infected CD23(-)CD80(-) B cells. The latent EBV yields the infectious lethal virus immediately on reactivation. Infected cell frequency is low, but stable over a period of time, representing a new form of latency in normal B cells.

Stem cells are units of natural selection in a colonial ascidian
Article Abstract:
Stem cell lineages are legitimate units of natural selection and in a colonial ascidian, Botryllus schlosseri, vascular fusion between genetically distinct individuals results in cellular parasitism of somatic tissues, gametes, or both. Data suggest that histocompatibility genes in Botryllus evolved to protect the body from parasitic stem cells usurping asexual or sexual inheritance.
