Productivity and survival of great horned owls exposed to dieldrin
Article Abstract:
Organochlorine pesticides such as dieldrin are chlorinated hydrocarbons that can product neurotoxicity. A study aimed to evaluate the productivity of Great Horned Owls at the Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge in contaminated and uncontaminated areas, and examine the link between dieldrin tissues burdens and survival. No evidence that owls on the Refuge suffered any direct dieldrin related reproductive impairment was found, supporting previous work. The data supports the concept that the major effect of dieldrin on raptor populations is via direct adult mortality.

Mobbing of Eastern Screech-Owls: predatory cues, risk to mobbers and degree of threat
Article Abstract:
Avian mobbing of raptorial birds is common and is thought to warn prey and deter predation. The Eastern Screech-Owl was studied as an example, with 33 incidents of mobbing taking place in 48 trials. 11 species of mobbers were among the 31 noted earlier. Most of the mobbers were permanent residents, with greater chances of predation because of their abundance and regular presence in the avian community.
