RNA editing in kinetoplastid protozoa

Article Abstract:

Informational content of gene transcripts can be altered during or after transcription through the process called RNA editing. In Kinetoplastid protozoa, the process is termed as kRNA since it occurs in the mitochondria. In this biological process, transcripts undergo remarkable posttranscriptional editing through uridylate insertion and deletion. This results to a dramatic remodeling of the pre-mRNA sequences that transforms small guide RNAs to mature RNAs.

Molecular genetics of the RNA polymerase II general transcriptional machinery

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted on the RNA polymerase II transcription in Saccharomyces cervisiae to determine the role of yeast genetics in identifying general transcriptional factors (GTFs) and their related functions. Results showed that most of the yeast GTFs can not been found genetically. The TATA-binding protein and the larger subunit of the TFIIF were the only GTFs found in genetic selections designed to identify transcription factors.

Maintenance and integrity of the mitochondrial genome: a plethora of nuclear genes in the budding yeast

Article Abstract:

The budding yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae is a model system for studying mitochondrial genetics in terms of nuclear control of the integrity and transmission of mitochondrial DNA. Research reveals that at least 70 genes of nuclear origin control mitochondrial genome functions suggesting that an evolutionary relationship exists between these two orgnelles.
