Renal agenesis in mice homozygous for a gene trap mutation in the gene encoding heparan sulfate 2-sulfotransferase
Article Abstract:
A gene trap mutation in the gene that encodes a heparan sulfate biosynthetic enzyme, heparan sulfate 2-sulfotransferase (HS2ST), has been described. Mice homozygous for the Hs2st gene trap allele do not survive the neonatal period and show defects of the eye and skeleton as well as renal agenesis on both sides. It may be that the Hs2st mutant phenotype comes from compromised interactions between growth factors and signal-transducing receptors. The results support the theory that morphogenesis can be influenced by regulated synthesis of differentially glycosylated proteoglycans in vertebrate development.

Role of Nr13 in regulation of programmed cell death in the bursa of Fabricius
Article Abstract:
Nr13 plays a significant part in maintaining bursal stem cells. Nr13 has been seen to be expressed at high livels in embryonic chicken bursa, then dropped sharply after hatching. Inhibiting cell death through Nr13 probably involves a BH4 domain and interaction with the death agonist Bax. Once BH4 is deleted, Nr13 becomes a death agonist.
