Sewall Wright's 'Systems of Mating'
Article Abstract:
The 'Systems of Mating' theory of geneticist Sewall Wright is a systematic analysis of the patterns of inheritance in interbreeding populations. Wright's 'System of Mating' is composed of three papers that discuss an analytical method for determining the frequency of trait inheritance in interbreeding populations of guinea pigs. Wright attributed genetic variation to heredity, environment and other ontogenic factors. He also formulated a model that illustrates the genetic pattern of coat-color inheritance among guinea pigs. Wright's work on the genetic mechanisms of animal breeding is applied in inbreeding and crossbreeding technologies.

Birds' eye view: a decade of Perspectives
Article Abstract:
John W. Drake conceptualized the publication of a series of essays entitled 'Perspectives' in Genetics during his tenure as editor of the journal. The scope of Perspectives was broadened to include not only perspective but also prospective essays. Articles that have integrated contemporary problems in genetics with classic studies served the prospective and perspective functions of Perspectives. Aside from its historical function, Perspectives also addressed issues on general genetics.

90 years ago: the beginning of hybrid maize
Article Abstract:
The year 1998 marks the 90th anniversary of George Harrison Shull's greatest contribution to genetics which was the publication of his paper entitled 'The composition of a field of maize.' Shull showed that heterosis in plant breeding removed the problem of declining production yield in inbred lines of maize. Thus, hybrid maize and heterosis became bywords in the US where the bulk of maize products in the 1950s became hybrid.
