Small-subunit rRNA genes and in situ hybridization with oligonucleotides specific for the bacterial symbionts in the larvae of the Bryozoan Bugula neritina and proposal of "Candidatus Endobugula sertula."

Article Abstract:

The small-subunit ribosomal RNA gene sequence of the bacterial symbionts of larval Bugula neritina was analyzed to determine phylogenetic affiliations of the symbionts. Hybridization studies using probes specific for the small-subunit ribosomal RNA gene sequence reveal that the bacterial symbionts are new species belonging to the gamma-proteobacterium. The proposed name for this larval Bugula symbionts is Candidatus Endobugula sertula.

'Candidatus Endobugula glebosa', a specific bacterial symbiont of the marine bryozoan Bugula simplex

Article Abstract:

The bacteria in the pallial sinuses of Bugula simplex larvae was identified and whether polyketide synthase (PKS) genes and bryostatin-like polyketides were present in the organism was determined. The reports demonstrate a symbiosis in B. simplex that is similar and evolutionarily related to that in B. neritina.

Evidence for the biosynthesis of bryostatins by the bacterial symbiont "Candidatus endobugula sertula" of the bryozoan Bugula neritina

Article Abstract:

Researchers show that a family of macrocyclic lactones called bryostatins are produced by a bacterial symbiont of Bugula neritina, not by the bryozoan itself. These genes could be introduced into other bacteria so the bryostatins could be produced industrially because they have anti-cancer activity.
