Specific detection and confirmation of Campylobacter jejuni by DNA hybridization and PCR

Article Abstract:

A specific DNA probe, pDT1720, is used to detect and confirm the presence of Campylobacter jejuni in spiked food samples and oligonucleotide segments from this probe are used as primers in polymerase chain reaction (PCR) studies conducted on milk and chicken rinse samples. Both methods are rapid, specific and sensitive detectors of C. jejuni contamination of food. Further, the PCR method has the potential to quantify bacterial counts in contaminated milk and chicken.

Microbial ecology of Campylobacter jejuni in a United Kingdom chicken supply chain: intermittent common source, vertical transmission, and amplification by flock propagation

Article Abstract:

Vertical transmission of Campylobacter jejuni in broiler chicken-rearing farms in England takes place between and within flocks and the isolation rate of the bacterium is dependent on the hatchery supplying chicks. A common source of the Campylobacter is evident in the absence of diversity of types and the intermittent high positivity of sheds. The frequency distribution of Campylobacter types for chickens supplied by 2 hatcheries exhibit distinct dissimilarity.

Temperature-driven campylobacter seasonality in England and Wales

Article Abstract:

The relationship between seasonal variation in human campylobacter infection in England and Wales and environment conditions is investigated to obtain new insights with respect to disease transmission. Public health interventions should not be restricted to food-borne approaches, and the epidemiology of the seasonal peak in human campylobacter infections may best be understood through studies in young children.
