Swimming marine Synechococcus strains with widely different photosynthetic pigment ratios form a monophyletic group
Article Abstract:
Motile marine Synechococcus strains make up a monophyletic group, the members of which show a wide range of phycourobilin (PUB)/phycoerythrobilin(PEB) ratios, photosynthetic pigment ratios. The genetic diversity of a set of isolates of the bacteria have been studied using the DNA-dependent RNA polymerase rpoC1 gene sequence. Data suggest motility, swimming ability, is a better indicator of genetic affiliation than are pigment ratios.

Synechococcus diversity in the California Current as seen by RNA polymerase (rpoC1) gene sequences of isolated strains
Article Abstract:
Cyanobacterial speciation in the California Current is investigated using polymerase chain reaction and isolation strategies. Two strains of Synechococcus were isolated from the oligotrophic edge of the current. Genetic analyses centered on the rpoC1 gene were conducted to determine phylogenetic relationships and the chromophore ratios particularly the ratio between phycourobilin and phycoerythrobilin in these strains.

Chromatic adaptation in marine Synechococcus strains
Article Abstract:
Researchers show that some strains of Synechococcus can grow in blue light by increasing the ratio of phycourobilin to phycoerythrobilin. This ratio was believed to be constant in these marine organisms. This may explain why Synechococcus is more abundant in open oceans than other cyanobacteria.
