Asian crisis 'to affect world growth for years'
Article Abstract:
The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) has reported that the prolonged economic crisis in Asia is set to have an affect upon world economic growth until at least 2001. It was thought that the affects would only be felt until 2000, but the implications of the crisis are now known to be far worse than originally believed. It seems unlikely that there will be a rapid return to stability in Asia, and the crisis looks set to continue to be a long drawn out affair. Growth in North America is expected to slowdown from 3.8% to just 1.9% by 2000, while in Europe the slowdown will be less prominent falling to 2.6% in 2001 from 2.9% in 1998. In Japan, the recession is set to take a much heavier toll than was originally expected; GDP is expected to reach 1.6%. Reforms are needed desperately to restore Japan's economy. Worldwide GDP is expected to slow from 4% in 1997 to just 2.3% in 1998 and will not rise again to its pre-crisis rates until 2001. World inflation will remain at 3.6%.

The CTL's kiss of death
Article Abstract:
The cytolytic T lymphocytes (CTLs) destroy CD4+ and CD8+ cells which are part of AIDS. The CTL forms pores in the target cell membranes by secreting perforin and granzymes which are secreted with the perforin. CTL stimulates a Ca+-dependent degranulation process in the effector cell. The CTL stimulates target cell apoptosis in which cell chromatin reduces and its DNA breaks into oligonucleosome-length fragments.
