Toluene 2-monooxygenase-dependent growth of Burkholderia cepacia G4/PR1 on diethyl ether

Article Abstract:

Aerobic bacterial growth on aromatic hydrocarbons usually needs oxygenase enzymes. Oxidation of diethyl ether by toluene 2-monooxygenase was observed to support faster growth of Burkholderia cepacia G4/PR1 than did the aromatic substrates n-propylbenzene and o-xylene. The wild-type Burkholderia cepacia G4 was not able to grow on diethyl ether. Purified toluene 2-monoxygenase protein components oxidized diethyl ether stoichiometrically to ethanol and acetaldehyde. Butyl methyl ether, diethyl sulfide and 2-chloroethyl ether were oxidized by B. cepacia G4/PR1.

Phosphoenolpyruvate phosphomutase activity in an L-phosphonoalanine-mineralizing strain of Burkholderia cepacia

Article Abstract:

The role of the covalent carbon-to-phosphorus (C-P) bond in phosphoenolpyruvate activity in an L-2-amino-3-phosphonopropionic acid in a strain of Burkholderia cepacia was investigated. Burkholderia cepacia strains were isolated to determine their capability to mineralize L-phosphonoalanine as a carbon, energy, phosphorus and nitrogen source independently of the phosphate status of the cell. Results showed that the strain can mineralize the L-enantiomer of phosphonoalanine and is capable of deregulated scission of the C-P bond of organophosphonates.
