The right to employability
Article Abstract:
The right to employability is gaining recognition as a concept, as evidenced by General Motors' and Ford Motor Company's agreements with workers to set aside funds to retrain workers. In these cases, the occupational retraining is occasioned by layoffs due to factory automation. As technological innovations increase and enjoy greater popularity, occupational retraining funds may also be established by trade unions to guarantee the employability of their members. Thus far, rights to employability have only extended to line workers; middle managers are not considered when occupational training programs or the funding therefor are planned. Because middle managers are not a bargaining force in U.S. industry, these individuals should obtain specific skills in areas such as accounting, finance, or information management, as a hedge against being laid off and as insurance for finding another position following a layoff.

John W. Drake's life prior to his tenure as editor of the Genetics journal was filled with adventure and entrepreneurial spirit. He was responsible for the establishment of the 'Gin and Tonic Tree' canteen beneath a tree near Lilly Building. He also established a network for collecting fresh semen at Caltech where he completed his doctoral studies. Drake demonstrated the multiplicity reactivation of polio virus inactivated by ultraviolet rays, proving that viral interference happened at the single-cell level.
